Supporting God's work in Liberia

By Jeff

Sometimes we are just not sure how our tithe is being used. So, I thought I would start letting you see some examples of how your money helps spread the kingdom.

Jesse and Calandra Togbadoya are an amazing couple. Besides the fact that they met in a car accident (she called 911 and the rest is history), they serve together in Jesse's home country of Liberia.

Jesse and I went to seminary together. He earned his M.Div and MBA while there. His life is one God moment after another. After all, how does a poor, former child slave from Liberia end up getting two Master's Degrees in the U.S., earning nearly $80,000 a year only to go back to his home country to serve God and His people? The God moment is not that he came to America and earned two degrees. That's easy for God to do. The God moment is that he would give it all up to go back and use his gifts in serving his people.

Jesse has spoken a couple of times at DBC about his work. DBC financially supports the work of God through Jesse for now. Who knows, we might even send a team there one day.

The Togbadoya's work among people living in extreme poverty. They share the gospel in places that the message of Christ has not reached. They have a big vision for transforming the spiritual, political and economic conditions throughout Liberia. In just over a year's worth of work, God has multiplied their efforts. They started a micro-loan network, funding new businesses for over 40 people. (Micro loans usually amount to $100 US dollars to start a business.) They run a school. (Salary for 10 teachers runs about $575 per month). They show the Jesus film and have started small groups for discipleship. Calandra started a business teaching the women how to cook American food for Westerners that come to Liberia on mission trips or for other business. They also adopted a child from Liberia.

They are an innovative mission couple with a big vision for what God wants to do in Liberia.
