Not Quite Ready

To anyone who has found this blog I want to apologize for the lack of posts. Jeff and I haven't had an opportunity to sit down and really discuss what we want to do. He just left for a long South America trip and that has delayed us somewhat. One of the decisions we have to make is whether or not to continue using this pay website or transition over to a free blogspot page. This site has a couple of perks, like the mapping link and linking to other static pages. You can also upload documents to the site and anyone can download them. I'm guessing that you can pull all of those things off on blogspot if you were savvy enough, and it appears to be easier to edit visuals on blogspot. If you don't use one of the canned formats on this site, it gets tricky. And finally, if I'm paying for the site I'm much more likely to be committed to its success. I'd like input on this if you have any.

I also want to comment about the use of the word "underground" in our blog name. The first impression "DBCunderground" gives is that we are somehow a resistance movement against the powers that be at DBC. Unfortunately Jeff and I aren't that cool. Yes, we are younger church members with post-modern sensibilities and that means we are unimpressed with heirarchial control, bigger buildings, nicer facilities, and marketing. Because I have no interest in the things that have recently (last fifty years) defined success for evangelical churches, I suppose that makes me a bit "resistant" to SBC business as usual (or CBF for that matter (if you don't recognize the acronyms you're better off for it (how many parenthetical statements can I nest (one more)))). However Jeff is on staff and , unless something goes horribly wrong, I will be on the leadership team, so if we have a problem with church leadership, we have a problem with ourselves.

The reason that I am drawn to images of resistance and rebellion is because at some level Christians are part of a rebellion against the compromised authority of the world. My view of Satan's authority in the world is that God originally gave authority to us and we have in turn given over the rights of that authority to Satan, or evil, or whatever you want to call it. We now live in a world that is on the whole at odds with God. That makes anyone who has put themselves under God's authority (in His kingdom) part of an underground movement. The church is the resistance.

There are a lot of places you can go with this idea and in future journal entries I will address some of them. The first one I will address is my general dislike of patriotic sentiments being expressed in church. I don't have time to tackle that now, so until next time...
-Michael
