Is That Even Christian?

From Michael

If you like movies, then you should definitely check out ChristianityToday.com’s media and culture page which includes some excellent movie reviews from a Christian perspective… heck, from any perspective. This isn’t a Focus-on-the-family movie discussion, dropping their Bible and uttering “Why I never…” every time a movie contains a questionable word. This is gritty, unflinching and honest discussion of movies for all their failures and glories. I love it. If you want to see what I mean check out this review of Stephen King’s The Mist.

Also, I've heard a lot about how anti-Christian The Golden Compass is, and I'd like someone in the know to write me and let me know exactly what the problem with it is. I read the first book (which the upcoming movie is based on) and it never did anything scandalous. Apparently the sacrilegious stuff comes in the last two books.

Michael: 'twas actually you that turned me on to Christianity Today in the past. I do check in with it every so often, along with metacritic.com and rottentomatoes, to see some of the buzz about any films I may consider viewing. I agree that Christianity Today offers reviews from a relatively "unsafe for the whole family" perspective by Christian publication standards, and I do appreciate that. It's good to be able to read about films, life issues, and music from a Christian and simultaneously culturally relevant standpoint.

The Golden Compass and the following books seem to obviously be taking pot-shots at the church and God proper. Too much to write in this setting, so therefore I will give you a dose of your own medicine regarding your Golden Compass question. This C-Today opinion is written very well, and I can't do better.

Also, I found this interesting post about The Golden Compass the other day. The friendlyatheist.com was started by an atheist who is an online friend to some of my Christian blogger friends. (The site is growing in popularity over time, I see.) The entries are worth checking out from time to time, for prayer purposes and to see how the other side thinks.

Ugh I hate that the links open in the same lil comment window, and the site doesn't accept HTML for opening in a new window. Plz right-click on links and select "Open in a new window." Thanks.

I have to admit that I appose the view that all entertainment should be family friendly. In my training as a painter and a writer we are thought that our job is to show the world as it is and not how we wish it were. This means showing sin as sin and righteousness as righteousness. Besides, some movies sans bad words may reflect an unchristian worldview. One of the great Christian artists of the past said, “it is impossible to make a sinless art of a sinful world.”
